Born and raised in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Tammy MacKenzie earned her Bachelor of Arts from Saint Mary’s University before going on to law school at Dalhousie University.

When asked what she enjoyed the most about law school, she says, “The Legal Aid Clinic. It was a great experience, handling client files and gaining a first-hand understanding of the legal system.”

Tammy articled with Burchell MacDougall’s Truro office, and joined the firm as an associate when she was admitted to the bar in 1999.

Her practice focuses exclusively on family law.

“It allows me to focus all of my attention on a diverse and constantly evolving practice area,” she explains, “and keep up-to-date on changes, new rulings and case law.”

She is a member of the Association of Collaborative Family Law Lawyers of Nova Scotia, and also represents children and guardian ad litem in child protection proceedings.

In her free time, Tammy is in the process of getting her pilot’s licence and says, “I was inspired by partner Jim Stonehouse, who has been a pilot for many years.”

Tammy has a 5-year-old granddaughter who keeps her busy, and she serves on the Board of Directors for the Colchester Community Workshop Foundation.
