Geographic Information System or GIS solutions are part of our daily lives today more than ever, impacting everything from urban planning to field operations. We've worked on a range of GIS projects, including consumer-focused apps and operational support platforms. Over the years, we consistently face three key challenges: 1. High Visual Load: Map-based interfaces are data-rich and visually challenging. To address this, we offer minimal information to prevent cognitive overload. 2. Data Processing Demands: Handling substantial data volumes is a technical challenge. Slow internet connections can exacerbate this. We invest in strategies like data caching to improve performance. 3. User Expectations: User expectations are often shaped by platforms like Google Maps. We follow established design patterns while also considering if a map-based interface aligns with the user's intent. To overcome these challenges, we prioritise minimalism, follow proven design patterns, provide context beyond maps, emphasise quality data, address processing demands, and re-evaluate map-based interfaces when needed. We recently collaborated with Austrade, the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, to restructure their web content to better meet the needs of their unique and diverse audiences. Austrade plays a crucial role in supporting Australian businesses by connecting them to global opportunities, providing valuable market insights, attracting foreign investors, and creating job opportunities. Their wide range of services caters to industries such as livestock, boutique winemakers, tourism, students seeking education in Australia, health, fintech, and international buyers interested in Australian goods and services. Recognising the challenge of scattered information across multiple websites, our teams joined forces to strategise the roadmap for a seamless web ecosystem. The outcome? A series of recommendations, design mechanisms and user-validated navigational pathways to guide users to the content that caters to their specific needs whilst highlighting Austrade's comprehensive range of services. We’ve taken home two golds and a silver at this year’s MELBOURNE Design Awards! It’s a bespoke workforce management tool we designed and built in with ETS Infrastructure Management. Our teams have been collaborating for over two years to create a product that has changed the way ETS approaches work for the better. Since its release, CanopyIQ has guaranteed the accuracy of data flow, reduced travel time between job sites, placed ETS ahead of competitors in their technology capabilities and improved overall efficiency of planning. It’s an honour to be featured among some of Melbourne’s best and brightest in design excellence and innovation.
