The Overseas Examinations Commission Act of 2005 incorporated the old Overseas Examinations Committee and renamed it the Overseas Examinations Commission. The former Minister of Education & Youth, The Hon. Maxine Henry-Wilson, named April 1, 2006, as the effective date of the Commission and this was published in the Jamaica Gazette. The Commission comprises 16 members representing all types of Tertiary and Secondary institutions as well as other agencies in the Public and Private Sectors which have a vital interest in the product of the Secondary School System. The Commissioners were named in February 2007 and the names published in the Jamaica Gazette Thursday, February 15, 2007. The change in title heralded the OEC's definitive departure from its old role as a voluntary, autonomous organization to a statutory board of government. The Overseas Examinations Commission is run by a Chairman and a committee of fifteen (15). The members of the Committee, including the Chairman, are nominated by the Minister of Education to serve for a period of three (3) years.
