"So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid."
— Mark 16:1-8
Alleluia! Christ is Risen! Christ is Risen indeed!
The time has finally come! The long wait is over! No need to strain to find the seed of joy on Easter Sunday—we can shout for joy, sing out for joy, exclaim our joy from the rooftops! The victory is won!
So why do we still feel sad or afraid, angry or anxious?
Joy is many things. It is, absolutely, the shout-from-the-rooftops glee, the burst-out-singing-Alleluia celebration, that I most associate with Easter Sunday. And, as our Lenten journey has, I hope, helped us remember, joy can also be something quieter, something more persistent and steady, that we grow and tend throughout all the seasons of our lives.
After Easter, fear turns to amazement turns into a steadfast, persistent hope, a sharing of good news that, again and again, rolls away stones of sorrow and reveals God making a way, yet again.
That’s worth celebrating! It’s worth celebrating today. And it’s worth holding on to that hope, tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and the next. While Easter Sunday has passed, Easter is a season that we celebrate for 50 days. A lot can change in 50 days. A lot can happen to us. We can feel a lot of different things. But whatever changes life may bring, we know: seeds of joy continue to be planted, to sprout, and to burst into full bloom.
A joyful Easter to you—Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia. Amen.
Grace + Peace,
David
