What to know

Pet euthanasia is the medical procedure of humanely ending an animal’s life with medication. Veterinarians often perform this painless procedure on pets with poor quality of life remaining, a terminal illness or unrelenting pain.

A Human Approach to Ease the Passing

Whether you choose to have your pet euthanized at our clinic or at home, the veterinarian will most likely administer a sedative before the actual euthanasia solution to ensure your pet is calm and relaxed.

Once the vet is confident the sedative has taken effect, they’ll administer an anesthetic called sodium pentobarbital. This will cause your pet’s heartbeat to slow down and stop. Your pet won’t feel any distress or anxiety: it will be as though they’ve drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep.

When your pet passes, their eyes may not fully close, and you may see them twitch, vocalize or take one final, deep breath. This can be startling. However, it’s a normal part of the process. After your pet has passed, you’ll be given as much time as you need to say goodbye.

Pet Euthanasia In Your Home

Choosing at-home euthanasia allows you to say goodbye to your pet where they’re most comfortable. They’ll be surrounded by familiar smells and loving, soothing voices. The procedure can be done in your pet’s bed or at their favourite spot in the backyard.

Additionally, allowing your pet to remain at home helps reduce the anxiety and fear of going to the clinic. It can also be less stressful for a pet who has limited mobility or whose movements cause discomfort and pain.

At-home euthanasia gives you and your family the privacy and time you need to say goodbye. You won’t be rushed, and you can ask the veterinarian any questions you might have about cremations and burials.
